In the township of Umlazi, many young people face socio-economic challenges and a lack of opportunities for positive self-expression. Since 2013, the Bek La Barre association has been using urban sports as a means of encouraging young people in Réunion to develop and get involved. With Ubuntu Street Fit, it is taking a new step by creating a bridge of solidarity with South Africa. By renovating a site dedicated to street workout, training young coaches and encouraging the exchange of practices, this project strengthens social cohesion and the mental and physical health of young people, offering a new impetus for integration through sport.
A winner of the «Coréom» international cooperation scheme, the association is now sharing its social and sports education model with its local partner in South Africa, Gravity Core, through the «Ubuntu StreetFit» project, supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), La Guilde, Région Réunion, the Fondation de France and the city of Durban.
The project uses street workout as a tool for social change, encouraging young people to get involved and become more independent, helping them to succeed and boosting their self-esteem. It also supports regional cooperation through intercultural exchanges.
